Oyler Convicted On 42 Of 45 Counts From Esperanza Fire

Raymond Lee Oyler was convicted Friday of the arson murders of five U.S. Forest Service firefighters and with setting the October 2006 Esperanza Fire that killed them.

The verdicts could cost Oyler his life.

The 38-year-old Beaumont mechanic faces the death penalty.

The Esperanza Wildfire, which began in Cabazon at 1:12 a.m., October 26, 2006, burned more than 40,000 acres and destroyed 34 homes in the Poppet Flats and Twin Pines areas along Highway 243 in Riverside County.

Four firefighters -- U.S. Forest Service Capt. Mark Loutzenhiser and three members of his crew, Jason McKay, Jess McClean and Daniel Hoover-Najera -- died after the fire overran their engine. A fifth crew member, Pablo Cerda, died 5 days later at Arrowhead Medical Center. Raymond Lee Oyler, a former Beaumont auto mechanic, has been charged with setting the fire.
